What Are Cataracts?

For many, the formation of cataracts is a natural part of the aging process, causing the eye's natural lens to cloud and distort vision. The lens is held inside a capsule, and is made of mostly protein fibers and water arranged precisely so as to permit light to pass through without interference. Over time, these fibers begin to break down and cluster together, clouding the lens. As more fibers break down, the clouding becomes denser and covers a greater area of the lens. Cataract surgery becomes necessary to restore clear vision.

Cataract Surgery – An Overview

Dr. Silverman performs cataract surgery for patients from Livingston and throughout northern New Jersey to remove the clouded lens and replace it with an artificial lens implant. Using a process called phacoemulsification, Dr. Silverman is able to effectively treat cataracts and restore clear vision.

Phacoemulsification

During phacoemulsification, Dr. Silverman removes the cataract but leaves the capsule mostly intact. To begin, a small incision is made where the cornea and the conjunctiva (a thin membrane covering the outer surface of the eye) meet. Next, a small probe – roughly the width of a needle – is inserted and emits ultrasound waves to emulsify the cataract and remove the lens fragments. A lens implant is then placed within the capsule.

The Intraocular Lens

Once the cataract has been removed, a clear artificial lens is placed in the empty capsule. These lens implants, or intraocular lenses (IOLs), are made of plastic, silicone, or acrylic, requiring no care or maintenance, and become a permanent part of the eye. Currently, the three most popular intraocular lens implants are the crystalens®, AcrySof® ReSTOR®, and ReZoom® IOLs.
